Varanasi is a religious city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and is located on the banks of the Ganges, just 320 kilometers southeast of the state capital, Lucknow. The city is among the seven holiest and sacred places in Hinduism and Jainism in India and it is a home to several temples and religious institutions that have their history dated back to the 18th century. The city is famously known as with several other names, including the city of temples, the holy city of India, the religious capital of India, the city of lights, the city of learning and the oldest living city on earth. The city is also a major industrial centre and is renowned manufacturer of several products, including muslin and silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works and sculpture. Varanasi has a total urban population of more than 1 million and its literacy rate is 77%.
