Student’s Islamic Activism at AMU
Hamza Ayyubi
Youth, they say, design the destiny of nations. And for a great people that have somehow weakened the sense of their purpose and are falling apart, like the nation of Islam, the youth are the blood that enlivens them and puts them back on the pedestal they belong.
In India, the task to uplift the Muslim community has fallen on the committed young men and women in colleges and universities, particularly those at the Aligarh Muslim University, the largest and paramount place of higher learning for Muslims in the country.
The founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, in fact, had envisioned the university as such a place: where the young minds will be steeped in the wisdom of Quran and ignited with the light of science so that they could guide mankind, and particularly the Muslims, to the path of peaceful and meaningful existence.
The students at the university, generation after generation, have strived to realise that dream. "Students of AMU" is carrying on with that task.
“It was on 14th Feb 2010 when a group of students organised an inter faith Program at NRSC Club of AMU inviting student speakers from different religions to present their viewpoint on “The Eternal Truth” that led to the foundation of this Islamic Activist Group working as Students of AMU”, said Nayyar Rehman who is the Media adviser of the group.
The group is spreading fast among the students. The motive of this group is to convey the message of Islam to the students and to encourage them to acquire its knowledge and understanding. It creates an awakening among students to follow it in their practical life. The group organizes those students who are prepared to strive for the establishment of Islamic way of life and guides them to effective ways for the study of Islam and modern sciences. It focuses on the building of Islamic Character and the development of intellectual capabilities to propagate Islam to intellectual elite of the society and defend Islam in a reasonable way. It makes efforts to solve the problems faced by the student community to get their genuine demands fulfilled and to lead them in their collective problems. For goals to be achieved a multi dimensional approach is being used which include personal contacts, Quranic classes, public lectures, conferences, corner meets, Dawah drives and social contact programs with other communities.
Abdul Rouf Mir, research scholar at J N Medical College and coordinator of the group while talking to this reporter said, "Two programs that constitute the central essence for this group are Quranic Group Discussion (QGD) and Dawah Training Program (DTP). Quranic Group Discussion (QGD) is a highly innovative and effective program wherein all the members of the group are given a number of verses of the Glorious Quran or some Islamic topic with much relevance to study for a week". "The participants work hard to understand the given subject and gather a thorough knowledge about the said topic from different Tafaseer of Quran and books by learned Scholars. The topic is rendered to open discussion and students are asked to face all possible questions. As a consequence all the members are able to grasp the topic in full. This way we have completed Surah Al Ahzaab by latest and the topics like Islamic monotheism, infallibility of Quran, Islamic social system, Islamic economic system, face veil, state of Islam, rights of Muslims and Non Muslims etc have been dealt in detail. The other essential program is Dawah Training Program (DTP). In this Program the group members are given a task of Dars e Quran, or other religious topic or the topic on current events with relevance to Global Muslim community to prepare and present among all the Group members. They speak and face questions from audience. Their speaking skills, body language, speech content, presentation, arguments are then criticised by the team members resulting in correction of mistakes and enhancement in confidence", he added.
“Among the unique features of the group is the broad thinking and open mindedness. Only those issues are taken up that are highly relevant and significant for the Muslim community. Insignificant and secondary issues are avoided so that the potential of the youth is not wasted. The topics dealt are very practical so that they can help the students to speak for Islam and defend the truth out in the field”, said Naghma Mirza a Medical student at the University and Coordinator of the girl’s wing. Explaining the essence of participation of female students Group leader Abdul Rouf said, “Girls are often ignored but this group has special attention to them. We believe that girls are equally responsible in the sight of Allah so they must also nourish their faith and contribute to the establishment of an Islamic society. They are the hands that rock the cradle and rule the world. So we have all activities open for girls. Islam never ignored them so can not Muslims”. The programs are separately coordinated for boys and girls of the university thus producing Da’ees in both the camps, he added.
The benefit of the group is not limited to the members of the group only but general students have a lot for them also. Giving details, a science graduate Mohammad Ayyubi said, “General students are reached through conferences, seminars, books, banners and handbills. For public awareness more than 200 small and large programs have been conducted”. “The public addresses on the topics like Mohammad (S.A.W) – The man with Mission, Steps to paradise, Islam face to face with current crisis, Principle of Dawah, The day of Judgement, Being a believer what does it mean, Religion stands for well wishing, Deception of wealth, Global crisis and Islamic alternative have been the most welcomed topics by the students community. The mega events that observed mass attendance of students were conferences like Karwaan e Aman, Demolition of Khilafah and the Rise of Islam in Turkey, Middle East conflict and origin of Israel and lecture series on Woman in the shade of Islam. Well known and established scholars like Dr. Obaidulah Fahd, Omair Anas, Dr. Ishtiyaq Danish. Dr. Najatullah Sidiqi, Abdullah Tariq, Dr. Abdul Majeed, Dr. Baziga Tabasum and Asma Shams have been invited for different programs. Books have been the main tool for mass awareness so many important books like Amazing Quran by Gary Miller, Process of Islamic Revolution by Maulana Syed Maududi, Woman in Islam versus woman in Judaeo-Christian faith-Reality and Myth by M. sharief, Islam and the future of the world by Murad Hoffman, Woman under Capitalistic Imperialism versus Woman under Islam by Sadat Husaini, Mohamed by R. K. Rao, Twenty most common question by Non Muslims by Dr. Zakir Naik, Ramadhan – A blessed Month by Abdul Rouf and Naghma Mirza etc have been mass distributed in the campus. Two libraries have been established, one each for boys and girls”, he added.
"Non Muslims students of the university or otherwise are gifted with copies of Glorious Quran and basic Islamic Literature, said Media Adviser of the group M. Nayyar Rehman."So far more than 2000 non Muslims have received the gifts and encouraged our group in helping them understand the religion through authentic scriptures. The group has been acknowledged by students and Daees at other universities and fields resulting in a healthy cooperation between them and us", he added.
The activities continue without any stop. QGD of Sura Yusuf for boys starting from Feb 2012 has resulted in more than 60 percent rise in registration and same is expected for the QGD and DTP for girls starting sooner after they complete Surah Al Ahzaab inshaAllah.
All these activities are coordinated by students of the university. The funds for books and other programmes come from generous contributions from the students. It is worth mentioning here that more than 60 percent of those funds are contributed by Girls of AMU. The University is excelling in its academic performance and this group is supporting the moral basis envisioned by the founder and the university administration.
The change is obvious and positive. If this group continues with its activities it will continue to have a positive influence on the students in future. Also the message is quite louder for those young souls who aspire to serve their community that if they are sincere in their commitment and dedicated to their cause then there is no one to stop them. “Students of AMU” was founded in a small room at AMU and now the effect is felt every where. They mark a change and call for a change.
