Our goal of grassroots leadership development is achieved through three distinct programs, the Community Leadership Program, Dronacharya & Ekalavya Mentorship Program, and Freedom Under Construction.

Community Leadership Program (CLP)
CLP is the largest program in Bhumi and takes up the majority of our daily operations. Through CLP, Bhumi trains, mentors, and coaches leadership fellows from the Rasoolpura community to emerge as model leaders. They are provided with resources to identify problems in their surroundings, come up with solutions, and then implement their plan. The current Bhumi Fellows are operating their projects within the broad domains of education, livelihoods, health and wellness, and water and sanitation. An extensive list of our projects fall under this program, including the play school for children ages 1-4, study center for students in classes 1-10, Aasha Crafts, water testing, and health awareness sessions. Dronacharya & Ekalavya Mentorship Program (DnE)
DnE is a unique leadership and personal mastery program in a mentoring framework where university students and young professionals are paired with underprivileged students in government schools to act as mentors, role models, and tutors. Mentors and tutors uncover their leadership potential through workshops and training, providing individual attention, compassion, and encouragement to the children that is often lacking in their current environment. This empowers the children to realize their potential and take responsibility for their own lives. For more about DnE, click here.

Freedom Under Construction (FUC)
Freedom Under Construction is a bi-annual effort to engage and awaken the youth in our country to discover the joy of participating in nation building by completing a service project requiring physical labor, such as building new classrooms or a bridge, with public participation from across the city. Taking place each year on 15th August and 26th January, the event is designed to create awareness that a great nation and responsible citizenship go hand in hand, while also creating crucial assets for communities in dire circumstances. _____________________________________________________________

Bhumi was born in 2006 from the question, "What it would it take for India to overcome the poverty challenge sustainably?" After much discussion and debate, our founders came up with the idea of developing grassroots leaders by identifying and supporting sincere people to serve their communities, simultaneously allowing for both their personal development and community development.

After identifying our mission, we committed ourselves to working in Rasoolpura, one of Hyderabad’s largest slums where people from many walks of life have coexisted for decades. We had a grand plan for leadership development, but we had to start building strong communities ties somewhere, and Rasoolpura fit the bill perfectly.

In the past seven years, Bhumi has experimented with many different models. We’ve had successes and failures, we’ve rejoiced and been disappointed. After overcoming the initial challenges, we honed our operations and found what truly works, while also staying open to new ideas, models, and programs that could better lives in the community. We hope to continue building leaders in Rasoolpura today and across the country tomorrow.
